Ricardo Semler on work

Parable of the stonecutters in Maverick (a book by an unconventional businessman Ricardo Semler of Semco) :

Three stone cutters were asked about their jobs.

The first one replied, “I’m paid to cut stones.”

The second replied, “I use special techniques to shape stones in an exceptional way, here let me show you.” He proceeded to demonstrate.

The third just smiled and said, “I build cathedrals.”

Ricardo wants a whole company of cathedral builders. He says, “The purpose of work is not to make money. The purpose of work is to make the workers, whether working stiffs or top executives, feel good about life.”

Beautiful little story, Sasha. I build cathedrals.

I hope you don’t mind that I followed you over here from Piper Bayard’s blog. Your comment there seemed to indicate that you had knowledge of the region, and maybe a dog in the fight. (That’s a phrase politicians use to mean that you have a personal interest in an issue.)

Interesting mix of topics here. Glad to meet you. :)TX

Thanks for stopping by. Yes I kind of have my dog in fight but really I try more to reach the truth than defend “my side” although this is quite a normal human trait. It is good to see the story from other side of the fence, ring or battlefield. The truth is mostly hidden somewhere in the middle. Pleasure is all mine!
